STRANGER THINGS' MILLIE BOBBY BROWN DELETES TWITTER ACCOUNT AFTER HOMOPHOBIC MEMES

The memes in question typically consist of photos and selfies of the 14-year-old actress accompanied by homophobic and racist slurs, usually with the hashtag #takedownmilliebobbybrown. Brown is a supporter of LGBTQ rights and an anti-bullying advocate; she publicly displayed a GLAAD Together movement pin to the MTV Movie and TV awards last year. It still isn't entirely clear where the meme originated, although Variety and The Wrap report that the memes have been attributed to members of the LGBT community as an "inside joke" on the social platform.
News of Brown deleting her Twitter account comes a week after Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran erased her Instagram account following months of harassment for her involvement in The Last Jedi.
Although Brown's personal Twitter account has been deleted, she has retained her @MillieStopsHate handle, which is reserved for her anti-bullying advocacy. Though this account hasn't been active since late last year, it's possible she will continue using it for her advocacy efforts. Brown and her team have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Brown is set reprise her role as Eleven in Stranger Things Season 3; the franchise was recently revealed by Netflix to be getting a Telltale adventure game in the coming months.
